15 year-old Food imported Into Nigeria From Asia
Many Nigerians have suddenly realized they’ve been eating rice that is as old as 15 years, according to the Guardian Newspaper news article published October 2, 2011 which can be found here. As bad as this may sound, it only shows how easy it is to import tainted and contaminated food into the country.
This comes as a total failure of the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to do their job.
Those organizations have failed us and will continue to do so if the current and future administrations continue to dance to the tune of the big corporations, including Dangote, the major food importer in Nigeria. Most of us know this incident is nothing but a tip of the iceberg when it comes to food safety in the country. People, including babies have been poisoned by food imported from China.
Those agencies in charge of food safety need to do a better job to ensure every food imported into Nigeria is safe, and any company involved in the importation of expired or tainted food will have its license revoked.
